earthyplates pàrras

pàrras

£150.00

Scots Gaelic for: ‘paradise’.

This hand-painted sculpture was unearthed in Mexico in 2023 using small batch slips and local Oaxacan clay. I hand-built and carefully painted her in a wonderful little studio called Alquima Taller in Oaxaca City. I only made a handful of pieces during my time in Oaxaca and each is wildly different due to the nature of the original clay (barro) and the techniques I played with thereafter. Here I worked with a beautifully plasticy clay and added some texture into the slips using sand I collected from the Oaxacan coast. Before the final firing I applied a transparent slip so that the colours brightened.

‘pàrras’ was inspired by the Kenyan painter Michael Armitage and his painting ‘Paradise Edict’. It explores the notion of tropical lands being romanticised, sometimes problematically so, yet also seeks to pay homage to the vibrancy that does indeed exist. On the underside i wrote ‘dualidad’ meaning ‘duality’ in spanish for the piece has two opposite faces, reminding us to always try and see potential alternative perspectives.

Approximate measurements: 0.83lb // H:17cm // W:13.5cm

Like all the mysterious fauna and flora we co-inhabit with, my ceramics are unique - what you own will not be replicated. Please do take care!
